Are Dental Implants Right for You?

La Perle Dental Center in Edmonton, AB TST 3T9

Understanding Dental Implants

Most tooth replacement options sit on top of the gum or rely on neighbouring teeth for support. An implant is different. It replaces the root of the missing tooth with a small titanium post that fuses directly to the jawbone. A crown attaches on top. The result is a tooth that feels like yours, functions like yours, and doesn't compromise anything around it.

At La Perle Dental Centre, implant treatment is handled in-house at fees below the Alberta fee guide. We'll walk you through every step and every cost before you decide anything.

A Permanent Solution

Implants are built to last a lifetime. There's no adhesive, no nightly removal, and no coming back in a few years to replace them. You get it done once. That's the goal.

It Protects the Bone Underneath

A tooth root does more than hold a tooth in place. It stimulates the jawbone and keeps it from shrinking. When a tooth is lost and not replaced, that bone gradually disappears. Your jaw changes shape. Your face changes shape.

An implant puts a root back where one is missing and stops that from happening.

It Feels Like Your Own Tooth

No diet restrictions. No removal at night. No moving parts. An implant is fixed in place and works exactly the way a natural tooth does. You brush it, floss around it, and forget about it.

When It's Time to Choose Dental Implants

Losing a tooth and leaving the gap untreated isn't a neutral decision. The consequences build over time:

  • The jawbone beneath the gap starts shrinking without a root to stimulate it
  • Neighbouring teeth gradually drift into the empty space, affecting your bite
  • The tooth above or below the gap can begin to shift without anything to bite against
  • Your chewing adapts around the gap, putting extra pressure on other teeth
  • The longer it's left, the more involved and costly the fix becomes

An implant stops all of that. It's not just about the missing tooth. It's about protecting everything around it.

Our Implant Treatment Options

We offer several implant solutions depending on what you're missing and what the best outcome looks like for your situation.

Single Tooth Implants

One post, one crown, one missing tooth replaced permanently. The straightforward, like-for-like solution for a single gap.

Implant-Supported Bridges

Two implants support a bridge that replaces several adjacent missing teeth. No neighbouring teeth need to be touched or reshaped to make it work.

Implant-Supported Dentures

Implants that hold a denture firmly in place. No slipping, no rocking, no adhesive. Chewing function improves significantly and the ongoing bone loss that comes with conventional dentures slows down.

All-on-4 Implants

A full arch of permanent, fixed teeth supported by four strategically placed implants. Built for patients missing all or most of their teeth who want a fixed solution. Often works even when significant bone loss has already occurred.

Single Tooth Implants

The most widely used implant type. Placed directly into the jawbone and used as the foundation for crowns, bridges, and denture stabilisation. Right for most patients with adequate bone density.

Fixed Dentures

Implant-anchored dentures that stay in permanently. They don't come out, don't slip, and feel far closer to natural teeth than anything removable.

The Ideal Candidate for Dental Implants

Most healthy adults with a missing tooth are good candidates. At your consultation, we look at:

  • Bone density in the jaw to confirm there's enough structure to support the post
  • Gum health, since active gum disease has to be treated before anything is placed
  • General health and anything that might affect healing
  • Smoking status, since smoking affects how well the implant integrates with the bone
  • Whether a bone graft is needed if bone loss has already occurred

Age isn't a factor. We've treated patients in their 70s and 80s successfully. What matters is your bone health, gum health, and overall health. If implants aren't the right fit, we'll tell you that clearly and talk through what else makes sense.

What to Expect During Your Implant Procedure

Step 1

Consultation and Assessment

We take X-rays, assess your bone density and gum health, and go through your options. You'll leave with a clear treatment plan and a full breakdown of costs. Nothing moves forward until you understand exactly what's involved and agree to proceed.

Step 2

Implant Placement

The post is placed into the jawbone under local anaesthesia. Most patients find it more straightforward than they expected. Some swelling and soreness for a few days after is normal and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.

Step 3

Healing and Integration

Over the next three to six months, the implant fuses with the surrounding bone. This is what makes it stable and permanent. A temporary restoration may be placed while you heal.

Step 4

Placing the Final Restoration

Once integration is complete, the crown, bridge, or denture is attached. It's matched to the shape and colour of your surrounding teeth so it blends in naturally.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I too old?

No. Age is not a disqualifying factor. Bone health, gum health, and overall health are what we look at. We'll give you an honest assessment at your consultation based on your individual situation, not a number.

What is All-on-4?

Four implants support a full arch of permanent, fixed teeth. It's designed for patients missing all or most of their teeth who want a fixed solution rather than removable dentures. It works even with significant bone loss in many cases.

Can implants support dentures?

Yes. Implant-supported dentures stay firmly in place, restore proper chewing function, and prevent the bone loss that conventional dentures accelerate. We offer both partial and full implant-supported options.

How much does it cost?

It depends on how many implants are needed, whether a bone graft is required, and what goes on top. We give you a full cost breakdown at your consultation. We direct bill insurance where it applies and offer in-house payment plans for the remainder.

Is an implant better than a bridge?

For most cases, yes. An implant replaces the root, preserves the jawbone, and leaves neighbouring teeth untouched. A bridge requires those teeth to be reshaped to serve as anchors. Implants also last longer. We'll go through both options so you can make the right call for your situation.

Can I get an implant if I have gum disease?

Not until the gum disease is treated. An implant placed in an infected environment won't integrate properly. We address the gum health first, then move forward with implant planning once things are stable.

What if I don't have enough bone?

Bone loss doesn't rule you out. If a bone graft is needed, we do that in-house and factor it into your treatment plan and cost estimate. We'll tell you exactly what's required at your consultation.

How long does the whole process take?

Three to six months from consultation to final crown, most of which is the healing period. The actual procedures are a small part of the timeline. We'll give you a realistic estimate based on your specific case.

Does it hurt?

The procedure is done under local anaesthesia. You won't feel pain during placement. Some swelling and soreness for a few days after is normal. Most patients are surprised by how manageable it is.

How long do dental implants last?

The post itself is designed to be permanent. The crown on top may need replacing after 15 to 25 years depending on wear. Regular checkups and good home care are the biggest factors in how long everything lasts.
