A Cap That Saves the Tooth

A dental crown is a full-coverage restoration that fits over your existing tooth like a cap. It protects what's left of a tooth that has been weakened by decay, a large filling, a crack, or a root canal — restoring its shape, strength, and function completely. With a crown in place, the tooth can last another 10 to 20 years or more.

At La Perle Dental Centre, crowns are handled in-house from preparation to placement. We direct bill your insurance, price below the Alberta fee guide, and fit a temporary crown the same day so you're never without coverage while the permanent one is being made.

Protects a Tooth That Would Otherwise Be Lost

A tooth weakened by a large filling, deep decay, or a root canal is at serious risk of fracturing. Once a tooth splits, it often can't be saved. A crown covers and protects the entire tooth, eliminating that risk and giving it a full lifespan.

Restores How Your Bite Feels

A damaged or heavily restored tooth affects how you chew and how pressure is distributed across your mouth. A crown brings the tooth back to its correct shape and height, so everything works the way it should — no more avoiding that side when you eat.

A Temporary Crown the Same Day

Your tooth is never left unprotected while we wait for the lab. At your first appointment, we fit a temporary crown, so you leave with full coverage, full function, and no discomfort in the two weeks before your permanent crown is ready.

What a Crown Actually Does

A crown encases the entire visible portion of the tooth above the gumline. It's recommended when a tooth has lost so much structure — through decay, fracture, or a large existing filling — that a regular filling can no longer protect it reliably.

Here's what a well-placed crown accomplishes:

  • Prevents a weakened tooth from fracturing under normal chewing pressure
  • Seals the tooth fully to stop decay from progressing underneath
  • Restores the correct shape and contact so neighbouring teeth aren't affected
  • Protects a tooth that has had a root canal, which removes the internal support that kept it resilient
  • Provides a stable, long-lasting result that functions like a natural tooth

When a Crown Is the Right Call

Not every damaged tooth needs a crown — but when one does, waiting usually makes things worse. Common reasons a crown is recommended:

  • A large or failing filling that has left the remaining tooth structure thin and vulnerable
  • Deep decay that has reached or approached the nerve
  • A cracked or fractured tooth where the damage can't be addressed with a filling alone
  • A tooth that has had root canal treatment and needs full protection going forward
  • A broken cusp or a tooth that has partially split
  • An older crown that is failing, leaking, or no longer fits correctly

If we recommend a crown, we'll show you exactly what's happening in your tooth and explain why a filling isn't enough. Nothing is scheduled until you understand the reasoning and agree to proceed.

What Happens If a Crown Is Delayed

A tooth that needs a crown and doesn't get one rarely stays stable. Here's what typically follows:

  • The tooth fractures or splits under normal chewing pressure, often making it unrestorable and requiring extraction
  • Decay spreads deeper into the tooth, reaching the nerve and requiring root canal treatment before a crown can even be placed
  • Pain, infection, or abscess develops, turning a planned procedure into a dental emergency
  • Tooth loss leads to bone loss and neighbouring teeth beginning to shift into the gap
  • Replacing the lost tooth with an implant or bridge costs significantly more than a crown would have

We've seen patients put off a crown for months to avoid the cost, only to return needing a root canal, a crown, and sometimes an extraction. The crown alone would have been the simpler, less expensive outcome. The sooner it's done, the less is involved.

What to Expect When You Need a Crown

Appointment 1 — Preparation & Temporary Crown

We numb the tooth and the surrounding area so you feel no pain throughout the appointment. Any decay is removed, and the tooth is shaped to create a precise fit for the crown. Impressions are taken and sent to the dental lab. Before you leave, a temporary crown is fitted to protect the tooth and maintain your bite while your permanent crown is being made. Most patients are surprised by how straightforward this appointment is.

The Lab Phase — About Two Weeks

Your crown is custom-made to match the shape, size, and shade of your surrounding teeth. We work with a dental lab to ensure the fit and appearance are right before it's delivered. You wear your temporary crown comfortably in the meantime.

Appointment 2 — Crown Delivery

The temporary crown is removed, and the permanent crown is checked carefully for fit, bite, and appearance before it's permanently cemented in place. We make any final adjustments and confirm everything feels right. Most patients leave this appointment without needing further follow-up.

Aftercare

A well-placed crown can last 10 to 20 years or more. The most important factors in how long it lasts are keeping up with regular cleanings, maintaining good home care, and letting us know if anything ever feels off. We monitor the crown at every checkup so small issues are caught long before they become problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I'm nervous about the procedure?

Tell us when you book. Our team is trained to work at your pace and will explain every step before it happens. We make sure you're fully numbed and comfortable before we begin. Oral sedation is also available for patients who need additional support.

How much does a crown cost at La Perle?

The cost depends on the tooth, the material, and whether any additional build-up is needed before the crown can be placed. We review all fees with you before anything is scheduled, direct bill your insurance, and offer in-house payment plans for any remaining balance. You'll know exactly what to expect before your first appointment.

What if I already had a root canal — do I need a crown?

In most cases, yes. A root canal removes the nerve and blood supply from inside the tooth, which makes the remaining structure more brittle over time. Without a crown, a root canal treated tooth is at significant risk of fracturing. A crown protects that investment and gives the tooth a full lifespan.

Will I need a root canal before my crown?

Not always. A root canal is only needed if the nerve inside the tooth has been affected by decay or damage. If the nerve is healthy, a crown can be placed directly. We'll confirm this at your preparation appointment — and if a root canal is needed, Dr. Jain is a trained endodontist and can complete both procedures in-house.

How long does a crown last?

With proper care, a crown can last 10 to 20 years or more. The lifespan depends on the material, where in the mouth it is, your bite, and how consistently you attend cleanings. We monitor your crowns at every checkup.

What are crowns made of?

Most crowns today are made from porcelain or ceramic, which matches the natural colour of your teeth and is very durable. We'll discuss the best material for your specific tooth — back teeth that take more chewing force may have different requirements than front teeth.

What is a temporary crown and will it hold?

A temporary crown is a protective cover fitted over your prepared tooth while the permanent one is being made. It maintains your bite, protects the tooth from sensitivity, and keeps the neighbouring teeth from shifting. It's designed to last two to three weeks comfortably. Avoid very sticky or hard foods on that side in the meantime.

How long does the process take?

Two appointments over about two weeks. The first is longer — typically 60 to 90 minutes for preparation and fitting the temporary. The second, for delivery of the permanent crown, is usually 30 to 45 minutes.

Does getting a crown hurt?

The preparation appointment is done under local anaesthesia. You shouldn't feel pain — only pressure. If at any point you feel discomfort, tell us and we'll adjust. After the appointment, some mild sensitivity for a few days is normal and typically managed with over-the-counter pain relief.

Why do I need a crown instead of just a filling?

A filling replaces missing tooth structure — but it only works when enough healthy tooth remains to hold it. When decay or damage has removed too much of the tooth, a filling can't provide reliable protection and the remaining walls are at risk of fracturing. A crown covers the entire tooth, distributing force evenly and protecting what's left. We'll only recommend a crown when a filling genuinely isn't enough.
